Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherry (plant)



Polish heirloom variety has an unusually fine flavor—very sweet with a nice hint of tartness. 1/2-3/4-inch fruit is enclosed in a papery husk which drops to the ground when fully ripe. High pectin content makes this one an excellent choice for pies and preserves. Upright bushy growth habit, grows well in pots. 65 days. Heirloom Veg. **Before planting, note that all parts of ground cherry plants except the fruit can be toxic to people and pets.**


Planting: Tomatoes are tender plants and are very susceptible to frost damage. Transplant after all danger of frost has passed. When transplanting, space about 2′ apart.

Growing: Full sun location, preferably with good air circulation. These plants are not picky when it comes to soil, they seem to prefer slightly acidic soil.  Ensure even watering, moist soil.

Harvest: Pick fruit when fruit is firm and turning full colour.

Pests & Diseases: Protect from cutworms by using protective collars around the plant stem or place cornmeal around plant base. Blossom end rot (a brownish-black, sunken dead area that forms on the bottom of the fruit) is a condition caused by a calcium deficiency due to uneven watering. Blight, another disease common to tomatoes is caused by warm, humid conditions particularly if plants have not been given some support to keep foliage off the ground. Good air circulation along with proper rotation will help to prevent onset of this harmful disease.

Companions: Asparagus, basil, borage, bush bean, cabbage, carrot, celery, chive, cucumber, lettuce, onion, pepper.
